As our current WSET Level 3 students prepare for their exams, we’re reminded that this qualification marks a real turning point. Level 3 is where wine stops being a collection of facts and becomes a system, the one you learn to analyse, explain, and communicate with confidence.
With that in mind, we’re excited to announce that The Tasty Glass Education will launch its first WSET Level 3 Award in Wines in the second half of 2026.
If you’re considering this step, here are six essential ways to prepare for the challenge ahead.

What Makes WSET Level 3 a True Step Up?
The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines, awarded by the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, is an advanced qualification designed for those who want to move beyond tasting notes and into real understanding.
Success at this level depends on your ability to connect theory, tasting, and reasoning — clearly and under exam conditions.
Six Essential Tips for WSET Level 3 Success
1. Shift from Learning Facts to Understanding Causes
At Level 3, knowing what a wine tastes like is no longer enough.
You’re expected to explain:
- Why it tastes that way
- Which factors influenced its style and quality
- How viticulture and winemaking decisions shape the final result
This change in mindset — from description to explanation — is one of the biggest leaps students make.
2. Taste Analytically, Not Emotionally
Level 3 tasting is structured and objective, get used to using SAT as a bible!
From the start, train yourself to focus on:
- Acidity, tannin, alcohol, body, and intensity
- Balance and quality assessment
- Precision of language
Enjoyment still matters, but in the exam, clarity and structure come first.

3. Learn to Justify Quality Assessments
One of the most challenging — and rewarding — aspects of Level 3 is quality evaluation.
It’s not enough to say a wine is “very good” or “outstanding”.
You must justify your assessment using balance, length, intensity, and complexity. (BLIC)
Practising this skill early will strengthen both your tasting confidence and your exam performance.
4. Train Your Brain to Make Connections
Level 3 rewards students who see wine as an interconnected system.
Ask yourself:
- How does climate influence structure and ageing potential?
- Why does timing of harvest change balance and flavour?
- How do different winemaking options impact texture and aroma?
When you understand relationships, memorisation becomes easier — and answers become stronger.

5. Practise Expressing Ideas Clearly and Efficiently
The written exam challenges your ability to communicate clearly under time pressure.
Strong answers are:
- Structured
- Focused on the question
- Free of unnecessary detail
Practising how you explain wine — verbally and in writing — helps turn complex knowledge into concise, high-scoring answers.
6. Choose the Right Learning Environment
Level 3 is demanding, and the environment you study in truly matters.
Small groups, guided tastings, and experienced educators make a significant difference — not only for understanding the material, but for staying motivated throughout the course.
At The Tasty Glass Education, we combine academic rigour with a supportive, human approach, allowing students to challenge themselves while enjoying the process.
